How to track motion
- Add the layer. Put a text, sticker or picture-in-picture overlay over the video clip, for as long as it should follow the person.
- Place it. Drag it where it should sit relative to the person โ beside the head, above the shoulder.
- Press ๐ Track motion (AI) in its Motion & layer section, or right-click the layer โ Track motion (AI).
- Play it back. The layer now follows the person, keeping the offset you gave it. The path is a set of normal motion keyframes, so any of them can be moved by hand.
Features
- Face-first tracking โ it follows the largest face, and the person's outline when the face turns away.
- Smooth paths โ the movement is smoothed so the layer glides instead of jittering.
- Works with every layer type: text, stickers, emoji and overlays.
- Editable โ keyframes appear as diamonds on the layer's bar; delete or adjust any of them.
- On your device โ the face model runs in your browser.
Ideas
- Lower thirds that move โ a speaker's name that stays beside them in a walk-and-talk.
- Reaction emoji that sit on a face for a comic beat.
- Spotlight a person in a group with an arrow or circle sticker.
- Hide something that moves with a person, like a badge, with a tracked sticker. (For faces themselves, use Blur faces.)
Frequently asked questions
Can it track objects, like a car or a ball?
Not yet โ it tracks people (faces first). For objects, set a few motion keyframes by hand: move the playhead, drag the layer, and a keyframe is recorded.
What if there are several people?
It follows the largest face in each moment. For a specific person in a group, split the clip so they are the biggest face, or adjust the keyframes afterwards.
Does the layer have to sit over a video?
Yes โ tracking reads the video clip under the layer, so the layer must start over a video clip.
