How to remove a background
- Add your clip or photo and select it on the timeline.
- Open the AI tab. In AI effects · selected clip, find Behind the subject.
- Choose a background treatment: Blur, B&W pop (the subject stays in colour), Spotlight (everything else dims), a solid Colour, or Image to place your own picture behind the subject.
- Refine and export. Add a Neon outline if you want the subject to stand out even more, check the result by scrubbing through, then export.

When to use it — and when a green screen is still better
AI segmentation is ideal when you can't control the location: a messy room behind a webcam, a busy street behind a vlogger, a stranger walking through an interview. Because it predicts the person's outline, fine details such as flyaway hair or a see-through glass are simplified. If you're filming a scene that must look perfect edge-to-edge — for example a presenter composited into a weather map — a well-lit green screen and the chroma key in the PiP tab will still give crisper edges.
Tip: contrast helps the model. A subject in a dark top against a light wall separates more cleanly than beige on beige.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a green screen?
No. The person is detected by an AI model, so any background works. A green screen is only needed if you want the crispest possible edges.
Can it remove the background from a product video?
For video, the cut-out is trained on people. For photos, choose Any subject and it will cut out products, animals and objects too.
Is my footage uploaded?
No. The segmentation model runs in your browser. The first use downloads the model, after which it works offline.
Can I use a video as the new background?
Put the background video on the main timeline and the person as a PiP overlay, then use chroma key or the AI cut-out on the overlay. For a still backdrop, the Image option is quickest.
