How to even out the volume
- Finish your cut, including voiceovers.
- Open the Audio tab and press Even out volume.
- Listen through. Every clip, overlay and voiceover now has a volume set to reach the same loudness; adjust any one by hand if you like.
- Set the music under the voices with the music volume slider — background music is deliberately left for you to choose.
How it measures
- Real loudness, not peaks — it measures the typical level of each sound in short slices, so one loud clap doesn't fool it.
- Pauses ignored — silent stretches don't count, so a clip with lots of pauses isn't mistaken for a quiet one.
- Same target for everything — clips, picture-in-picture overlays and voiceovers end up matched.
- Turns loud clips down, not quiet ones up — clip volumes top out at 100%, so louder clips are brought down to the quieter ones; voiceovers can be raised up to 200% to sit with them. Nothing is pushed into distortion.
Tip: remove background noise first. Noise makes a clip measure louder than its voice really is.
Frequently asked questions
Does it change my music?
No — background music stays where you set it, because how loud music should be under speech is a creative choice.
Is this the same as loudness normalisation on YouTube?
It's related. YouTube turns a whole video up or down; this balances the parts inside your video so nothing jumps.
Can I undo it?
Yes — one undo restores the previous volumes.
