How to turn one long video into several shorts

What makes a good short

A short isn't a trailer for your long video; it's a complete, tiny story. The ones that travel share three traits:

• A hook in the first 1–2 seconds — a surprising statement, a visible result, a question. Viewers decide almost instantly whether to keep swiping.
• One idea. One tip, one reaction, one punchline. If you need "and also", it's two shorts.
• A payoff before the end. Loops happen when the ending lands and viewers let it replay.

The workflow at a glance

1. Find candidate moments with AI highlights.
2. Pick one moment and build a hook around it.
3. Reframe to vertical.
4. Caption, add music and export.
5. Undo back to the full edit and repeat for the next moment.

1. Find the moments

Add your full recording and open AI highlights in the AI tab. Choose 60 s first even if you want shorter clips — you're using it as a scout. VDOAPP scores every half second for sound, faces, motion and sharpness and assembles the strongest stretches.

Watch the result and note which pieces grab you. Those are your candidates. Loud, animated moments score highly — often laughter, reactions, demonstrations — but the AI can't know which sentence is insightful. A quiet but brilliant line might need you to find it by hand. Tip: generate captions on the full video and skim them like a transcript; it's the fastest way to find quotable lines.

2. Build the hook

Undo back to the full edit, then trim a copy to your chosen moment. Now look for the most interesting sentence or image within it and move it to the front:

• Talking video: start mid-thought with the boldest claim. "Most people store coffee wrong" beats "So today I want to talk about coffee".
• Demo or result: show the finished result for one second first, then how it was done.
• Reaction: start on the face at the peak, then show what caused it.

Use ✂ Split at playhead (S) and the ◀ Move buttons to reorder pieces. Keep the whole short between 15 and 45 seconds unless the idea genuinely needs more.

3. Go vertical

Set Canvas → Aspect ratio to 9:16 and choose Fill (crop). A landscape video now shows only its middle third — fine if you're centred, not if you move. Select each clip and press Smart reframe in the AI tab: it tracks the person and pans the crop to follow them smoothly.

For screen recordings or wide shots with two people, Fit with a Blur background is often better than cropping: nothing is lost and the blurred copy fills the frame.

4. Captions and sound

• Captions are mandatory. Put them at Middle position — the bottom of vertical feeds is covered by the app's own text and buttons.
• Tighten pauses with Remove silences at 0.35–0.5 s for a brisker pace.
• Music low under speech, and let it come up at the end.
• Use Auto zoom for talking heads — punches in on emphasised words, adding movement without new footage.

Making several shorts from one recording

Everything you do is undoable, and VDOAPP autosaves your project in the browser. A practical rhythm:

1. Finish short #1 and export it.
2. Undo back to the full recording (or reopen the project and choose Continue).
3. Make short #2 from the next candidate. Reuse the same caption style and music style so your shorts feel like a series.
