1. Where is my footage processed?
Cloud tools upload your video to their servers; on-device tools process it on your computer or phone. Read the privacy policy for what happens to uploads — how long they're kept, whether they may be used to improve models, and who can access them. If you edit footage of children, clients or sensitive events, this may decide everything.
2. What does it really cost?
"Free" often means a limited number of exports, AI minutes or credits per month. Look for: per-minute caption limits, credits that expire, features locked behind a plan, and whether the price changes with video length or resolution. Tools that run AI on your device can afford to be free because they don't pay for server GPUs per minute.
3. Is there a watermark?
Check the free tier's export. A watermark on every video is a fair trade for some people and a deal-breaker for others — but you should know before you spend an hour editing.
4. Does it handle my language?
Most tools caption English well. If you work in Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Tamil or another less-represented language, test with a real clip before committing: does the output use the correct script? Does it translate when you only asked for a transcript? Can it translate captions into the languages your audience reads?
5. What export quality do I get?
Look for the resolutions (is 1080p or 4K included?), frame rates, and whether you can choose quality. Some online editors export only 720p on free plans, or re-compress heavily. If you film on a modern phone, you'll want at least 1080p.
6. Can I edit the AI's output?
AI gets things wrong. Good tools make every AI result editable: captions as text you can correct, highlights you can re-trim, cut-outs you can switch off per clip, and a reliable undo. Be wary of "magic" features that produce a finished video you can't adjust.
7. Does it work with my files?
iPhone HEVC video, 4K footage, dash cam .ts files, screen recordings, variable frame rates — try your actual files. Also check how it copes with long recordings: does playback stay smooth? Is there a proxy or preview-copy option for heavy footage?
8. Can I work offline or on a bad connection?
Cloud editors need a fast upload for every video. On-device tools need a download once per model and then work without a connection — useful when travelling or on mobile data.
9. Who owns the result — and what's the licence for built-in assets?
Your videos should remain yours. Also check the terms for built-in music, stickers, fonts, AI voices and AI models — some are free for personal use only. For commercial projects, a quick read of the licence saves trouble later.
