The short version
- Film with room to crop: keep the subject centred with space around them.
- Pull out self-contained moments — a tip, a story, a strong opinion — as short clips.
- Reframe each clip for the platform's shape rather than letting apps crop it.
- Give every clip its own hook and captions.
- Publish on a schedule, not all at once.
Plan the shoot for repurposing
- Frame with a margin. Keep your subject in the centre of a horizontal frame so it can be cropped to vertical without cutting off heads or hands.
- Speak in self-contained chunks. Make each point understandable on its own, so it can become a standalone clip.
- Restate context. A quick "the biggest mistake with lighting is…" works as both part of a long video and the start of a short one.
- Record in the best quality you can — crops and zooms lose resolution.
Find the clips
Watch the long version and note moments that work alone:
- A single tip or step with a clear result.
- A surprising fact or strong opinion.
- A short story with a punchline or lesson.
- A before-and-after or reveal.
- A funny or emotional reaction.
Aim for clips of roughly 15–60 seconds that start with a strong line and end on a payoff.
Reframe for each shape
| Platform | Shape | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 16:9 | The full-length original. |
| TikTok, Reels, Shorts | 9:16 | Crop to vertical, keep the subject centred, add large captions. |
| Instagram and Facebook feed | 4:5 or 1:1 | Crop slightly tighter; titles above or below. |
| 1:1 or 4:5 | Lead with the professional takeaway; captions essential. | |
| X (Twitter) | 16:9 or 1:1 | A short, punchy clip with captions. |
Adapt, don't just resize
- New hook. Each clip needs a strong first line and on-screen text — the long video's intro won't do. See our scriptwriting guide.
- Burned-in captions for silent autoplay, placed in each platform's safe area.
- Tighter pacing for short-form: cut every pause.
- Platform-appropriate endings: "full video on YouTube" works as a call to action from short clips.
- Native music and trends can be added inside each app where appropriate.
Step by step: repurpose in VDOAPP
- Export the long version first in 16:9 from the free online editor.
- Start a short clip: open your original footage again and trim it to one self-contained moment with the trim tool.
- Reframe: in the Canvas tab choose 9:16 and Fill, then drag the picture in the Clip tab to keep the subject centred. Use keyframes to follow movement.
- Add a hook and captions in the Text tab.
- Export, then switch the canvas to 4:5 or 1:1 and export again for feeds.
- Repeat for each clip you found.

A simple schedule
Spread clips out over days or weeks instead of posting them all at once. For example, publish the long video, then one short clip every couple of days, each pointing back to the full version. Track which clips perform best — they tell you what to make more of next time.
