The short version
- Show a few words at a time, timed exactly to when they're spoken or sung.
- Make key words bigger, bolder or a different colour.
- Use two or three animation styles, not ten.
- Change text on beats and pauses for rhythm.
- Keep a simple background so the words stay readable.

Timing is everything
Kinetic typography feels right when words land exactly as they're heard. Listen to your audio and mark where each phrase starts. Show one short phrase — often one to four words — per text item, appearing on its spoken word and leaving at the end of the phrase or on the next beat. Pauses in the audio are opportunities: a blank beat or a single word on screen adds drama.

Hierarchy and emphasis
- Size: the most important word in a phrase can be two or three times larger.
- Weight and font: a bold display font for key words, a simpler font for connecting words.
- Colour: one accent colour for emphasis, used consistently.
- Position: stack words or offset them to create shapes and movement across the frame.
Choosing animations

Pick a small set and repeat them — consistency makes it feel designed. Save the most dramatic animation for the most important moment.
Fonts, colour and background
Choose one or two fonts at most, with strong contrast against the background. Plain colour backgrounds, blurred footage or a slow gradient work well; busy footage fights the text. Add an outline or box style if the background changes. For more on readable text, see our text guide.
Step by step: make a kinetic text video in VDOAPP
- Add a background — a photo, a simple clip or a colour image — to the free online editor.
- Add your audio: music in the Audio tab, or record narration with 🎙 Record.
- Add the first phrase in the Text tab at the moment it's heard, and set its Until time to the end of the phrase.
- Choose In and Out animations — for example Letters in and Fade out — and adjust their length.
- Emphasise key words with a larger size, a different font or colour, and a Pulse or Wave loop.
- Repeat phrase by phrase, scrubbing the playhead to check timing.
- Export in the shape you need.
Words and music rights
Song lyrics, poems, book passages and speeches are usually protected by copyright, as is the music itself. Use your own words, public-domain texts or material you have permission to use, and licensed or royalty-free music. Short attributed quotes may be allowed in some contexts, but the rules vary by country and platform.
